Bowling

Last night we took the Ethiopian children that we work with bowling. It was a lot of fun. I don't think my kid had been bowling before, so it was a good experience for him. The kids were, as usual, really rambunctious and excited to see us. They also were really excited for bowling. Israeli bowling alleys are different from American bowling alleys for 2 reasons:
1. They do not rent bowling shoes. In fact, they don't even require them.
2. The claw machines in the arcade have cigarettes with 20 shekel notes attached to them instead of stuffed animals.

Anyways, bowling was lots of fun. I said goodbye to my kid. I don't think he cared. Or he didn't understand my broken Hebrew. Either way, having the opportunity to tutor was a great experience and I learned a lot about Ethiopians and how they're adapting to Israel. Tutoring also gave me the opportunity to speak Hebrew for a few hours a week. It was tough most of the weeks, but it was still a good experience.
(I think this picture really shows the elements of American culture that have penetrated into the Ethiopian community here. And no, that is not a cigarette in his mouth, it is a sugar tube)
